VIII Football Championship of the Local Border Traffic Area for Young Russian and Poles took place in Frombork.

For the eighth time now, we invite you to the football championships, which are not only the arena of sports competition and an example of popularisation of football among the youngest adepts of this most popular game in the world, but also facilitate the establishment of relations between young people and the training environment from Poland and Russia.

This year we invited the participants of the first stage of the championship to Frombork, a city which was once an important centre of the state covering the lands from where both Polish and Russian championship participants will come, and which has become famous all over the world thanks to groundbreaking work on the rotation of celestial bodies by Nicolaus Copernicus. Maybe among the children who played football in Frombork were the future holders of the most important titles in the football world. The Championships are co-organized by the Centre for Polish-Russian Dialogue and Understanding, Frombork City Hall, the Local Association of Polish-Russian Friendship (http://nadzalewowe.pl/), the Youth Social Organization of the Kaliningrad Oblast "Football" and the Foundation of the Centre for Polish-Russian Dialogue and Understanding.

During the first stage of the championship in Frombork 12 teams met: 6 Polish (from Warmian-Masurian and Pomeranian Voivodships) and 6 Russian (Kaliningrad Oblast).  168 children from Poland and Russia fought for the Championship of the Local Border Traffic Area for 3 days (17-19 May). The tournament is intended for boys and girls aged 11-12, who play matches on the pitches of Frombork and Tolkmicko in the system "everyone with everyone", and for the victory, they compete in the play-offs system. In total, there was 30 matches, and in addition, during the opening of the championship’s competitors played in friendly matches in mixed Polish-Russian teams. This year, the competition of teams in the U-10 age category will move to the other side of the border. 12 teams from Poland and Russia will meet on the pitch in Kaliningrad at the beginning of September,  where the Borderline Cup Tournament, the second stage of the Championship of the Local Border Traffic Area in Football for Boys and Girls will be held.

"Football is one of the most popular sports in the world. Football competitions arouse great emotions – globally and locally – as we can see both on the occasion of the Champions League and the local games. The idea of the championship was created precisely in order to use these positive emotions to bring together young athletes from Poland and Russia. I am glad that the tournament is permanently inscribed in the calendar of cross-border sports events. It's not only about competition, but also about promoting fair-play and healthy lifestyle principles," said Ernest Wyciszkiewicz, director of the Centre for Polish-Russian Dialogue and Understanding.

The Centre for Polish-Russian Dialogue and Understanding promotes dialogue in Polish-Russian relations. The Centre conducts scientific research and publishing activities, popularises knowledge about the relations, history, and culture of both nations. One of the Centre's priority tasks is youth exchange, and thanks to the "Polish-Russian Youth Exchange" Programme, more than 150 projects have been implemented so far, involving more than 5,500 young Poles and Russians.
